Carrick Rowers Enjoy Success at Athlone Regatta

Carrick-on-Shannon Rowing Club enjoyed a long but hugely successful day at the Athlone Regatta last Saturday, returning home with an impressive haul of victories and podium finishes across multiple categories.

Held at its traditional venue of Coosan Point on the shores of Lough Ree, the regatta began in challenging conditions. A strong crosswind created tricky racing throughout the morning session, but as the day progressed, the breeze eased. Competitors were treated to calm waters and warm sunshine for the remainder of the event.

In total, Carrick crews recorded six brilliant victories and six close runner-up finishes. It proved to be an excellent day of racing and invaluable preparation for the club’s Junior 13, 14, and 15 squads ahead of the Rowing Ireland 1K Classic (the underage championship event), which takes place at Lough Rinn in two weeks’ time.

The Golden Runs: Carrick’s Six Victories

  • Women’s Junior 18 Double Sculls: Lucy Brady and Roma Dowler led the charge, claiming a fantastic victory.
  • Men’s Junior 16 Single Sculls: Eli Lowe and Malachy Chilton both dominated the water, each securing victories in their respective races.
  • Men’s Junior 15 Coxed Quad Sculls: The crew of Adam O’Brien, Darragh Ryan, Darragh Holohan, and Riain O’Donaile—expertly coxed by Krystian Wach—produced a powerful performance to take the win over Blackrock College Dublin, St. Michael’s Limerick, and hosts Athlone.
  • Men’s Junior 14 Coxed Quad Sculls: Ruben Lowe, Eanna Kelly, Fionnan Kelly, and Senan Moran (coxed by Nessa Flynn) won their event in style to maintain their unbeaten record this season.
  • Men’s Junior 14 Double Sculls: Keeping the momentum going, Fionnan Kelly and Senan Moran combined forces once again to secure a definitive victory.

Narrowly Missed: Six Strong Runner-Up Finishes

Demonstrating just how competitive the Carrick squads were, six more crews fought hard to secure impressive second-place finishes:

  • Women’s Junior 18 Quad Sculls Roma Dowler, Roisin Feely, Lucy Brady, Ingrig Jamieson Stritch
  • Women’s Junior 16 Single Sculls: Hannah Butler
  • Women’s Junior 18B Double Sculls: Hannah Butler and Ingrid Jamieson Stritch
  • Men’s Junior 15 Single Sculls: Darragh Holohan
  • Men’s Junior 15 Double Sculls: Adam O’Brien and Krystian Wach
  • Men’s Junior 14 Double Sculls: Ruben Lowe and Eanna Kelly

Looking Ahead to Lough Rinn

These strong performances across all age groups underline the progress being made throughout the club.

The weekend’s results provide plenty of encouragement and momentum as Carrick’s young athletes now turn their full attention to one of the highlights of the junior rowing calendar: the upcoming Rowing Ireland 1K Classic on their home waters at Lough Rinn.

Well done to all our crews over the day, huge thank you to the parents for looking after all on the day and massive thanks to everyone in Athlone Boat Club for a very well run event and great hospitality.
